What is the Lifespan of Breast Implants?

Women should not expect their implants to last forever - but they shouldn't expect to replace them after 10 years either. Despite what you may think, breast implants are incredibly strong and durable. The majority of women who get implants don't ever need to replace them. Here are the top three reasons why women need to get their implants replaced.

  1. To change the size: The number one reason women get their implants replaced is to increase or decrease the size of them.
  2. Deflation: The second most common reason is that one or both of the implants deflate. This is not a problem with silicone implants, but can happen to saline breast implants over time.
  3. Capsular contracture: After breast implants are placed, the body forms a "capsule" of scar tissue around it. If this capsule contracts and squeezes the implants, it can cause pain and distorts the appearance of the breast implants.

Surgeons have theorized that the cause of this "10-year misconception" is the manufacturer's warranty on breast implants. For almost all breast implants, the manufacturers put a 10-year warranty on the implants themselves. However, this doesn't mean that they need to be replaced. But after 10 years, the manufacturer won't pay to replace the breast implants if something happens to them.
